“O mankind! We created you from a single pair of male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you might get to know one another. Surely the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is he who is the most righteous. Allah is All-knowledgeable, All-Aware” (Al Hujurat, 13) UT Muslim successfully held a “Tea Time” event for the sisters. It is a great time for us, as a woman and a muslim to meet and get to know each other. The are many muslim women in Enschede but there isn’t much opportunity for us to gather and have a talk. It is a great time and opportunity for us to talk about our experience as muslim women in especially Netherlands, and Europe generally. We come from different countries and cultural backgrounds (Indonesia, Egypt, Iran, Nigeria), and Islam brought us together. We were discussing about Islam in our homeland, how the muslim women in our country live, hijab styles and culture. And of course, we cannot miss to tell our story as students, residents, and tourists while we travel around Europe.Sometimes we get bad experiences in our daily life, such as people staring, screening from head to toe, talking bad about us, and avoiding contact. However, the good experiences outweigh the bad ones as there are many kind people that help us in every opportunity. There is a misconception that women are oppressed in Islam, so what should we do? We have to show the world that it is totally untrue, by being ourselves; we are women, black or white, wearing hijab, and foreign student. We have the same opportunity as men to pursue our dreams. Allah promises in the Qur’an that the noblest between us is the one who is the most righteous and Allah did not segregate us as a man and a woman.
