Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu Hazim ibn Dinar that Abu Idris al-Khawlani said, "I entered the Damascus mosque and there was a young man with a beautiful mouth and white teeth sitting with some people. When they disagreed about something, they referred it to him and proceeded from his statement. I inquired about him, and it was said, 'This is Muadh ibn Jabal.' The next day I went to the noon-prayer, and I found that he had preceded me to the noon prayer and I found him praying." Abu Idris continued, "I waited for him until he had finished the prayer. Then I came to him from in front of him and greeted him and said, 'By Allah! I love you for Allah!' He said, 'By Allah?' I said, 'By Allah.' He said, 'By Allah?' I said, 'By Allah.' He said, 'By Allah?' I said, 'By Allah.' " He continued, "He took me by the upper part of my cloak and pulled me to him and said, 'Rejoice! I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, "Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, said, 'My love is obliged for those who love each other in Me, and those who sit with each other in Me, and those who visit each other in Me, and those who give to each other generously in Me.' " ' " Look how the taabi’i, Abu Idriss, rahimahu Allaah, instantly loved the sahaabi, Mu’adh ibn Jabal, radiya Allaahu ‘anhu, for the sake of Allaah. They had never met before. Such love could only take place when they themselves had a deep connection with Allaah in the first place, and see how Allaah proclaims His Love on those people. Only by getting closer to Allaah we could attain something like this. But how does one get closer to Allaah? The best way for this, dear brother, is by strengthening your relationship with the Book of Allaah, the Quran. This book, my brother, will guide your through your days of darkness. Whenever you are sad, read the book of Allaah and you will find comfort therein. Whenever you have trouble leaving sins, read the book of Allaah and it will make you stronger and more steadfast upon Allaah’s path. Whenever you feel weak in your reliance upon Allaah, open up the Quran and read how, for example, Musa ‘alayhi as-salaam was saved when the sea was in front of him and an entire army behind him. Or how Ibraheem ‘alayhi as-salaam stepped into the fire, trusting in what Allaah had pre-ordained for him. This Quran will change you, wallaahi, and help you in ways unimaginable. But what about us? Do we enjoy Quran the way the Salaf did? Allaah speaks about the Day of Judgment, wherein he says that our Prophet, salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, will say that his people abandoned Quran (surah Furqaan, ayah 30): The wording in this ayah is profound. Mahjooran does not simply mean ‘abandon’, but implies leaving something way behind, as if it is said that people made Hijrah from Quran, as if they migrated from Quran entirely! That, whilst the word ‘haadhaa’ has been used, which implies closeness, i.e. li al-qareeb, as if to say: “This Quran was right in front of us!” On the one hand we have migrated from Quran, whilst that same Quran was right here. Right in front of us.
May Allaah make us of those who kept this Quran at heart, and of those who make reading and implementing Quran a daily part of our lives. When Musa ‘alayhi as-salaam wanted to see Allaah - and you all know this story - Allaah told him that he wouldn’t see Him, but he could look at this mountain, after which that mountain collapsed to dust the moment Allaah appeared to that mountain, and Musa became unconscious. And when he woke up, Musa praised Allaah and repented, saying he was the first of the believers (i.e. it wasn’t like he didn’t believe in Allaah), after which Allaah said: "O Musa I have chosen you above men by My Messages, and by My speaking (to you). So hold that which I have given you and be of the grateful.'' Just like with Musa ‘alayhi as-salaam, dear brother, we have been given Quran, and we need to hold on to what Allaah has given us of His Speech, and be grateful, by Allaah. To end, let me tell you about something that happened during the life of the Prophet, salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, which is narrated by Muslim (796). Abu Sa'id al-Khudri told of Usaid b. Hudair saying that one night he recited the Qur'an in his enclosure, when the horse began to jump about. He again recited and (the horse) again jumped. He again recited and it jumped as before. Usaid said: I was afraid lest it should trample (his son) Yahya. I stood near it (the horse) and saw something like a canopy over my head with what seemed to be lamps in it, rising up in the sky till it disappeared. I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the next day and said: Messenger of Allah, I recited the Qur'an during the night in my enclosure and my horse began to jump. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: You should have kept on reciting, Ibn Hudair. He (Ibn Hudair) said: I recited. It jumped (as before). Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) again said: You should have kept on reciting, Ibn Hudair. He (Ibn Hudair) said: I recited and it again jumped (as before). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) again said: You should kave kept on reciting, Ibu Hudair. He (Ibn Hudair) said: (Messenger of Allah) I finished (the recitation) for Yahya was near (the horse) and I was afraid lest it should trample him. I saw something like a canopy with what seemed to be lamps in it rising up in the sky till it disappeared. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Those were the angels who listened to you; and if you had continued reciting, the people would have seen them in the morning and they would not have concealed themselves from them. [Sahih Muslim: 796] May Allaah make us from those who benefit from Quran. May Allaah make us from those who intend to memorize Quran completely, and reward us in that manner, even though we may have not finished Quran at the end of our lives, and may Allaah strengthen our characters and our obedience to Him.
