وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيْدٌ مَجِيْدٌ الم {1} أَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ أَنْ يُتْرَكُوا أَنْ يَقُولُوا آمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ {2} وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ ۖ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكَاذِبِينَ {3} Alif laaam meeem Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried? But We have certainly tested those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars. (Al-Ankabut: 1-3) My dear brother in Islam Alhamdulillah, we had just finished our exam week. Maybe some of us still has exam after this. But do you know that we have an exam that is more difficult? The reward much greater, the cost of failure much worse. And this exam has no resit nor remedial. If we fail, we will bear the burden forever. However, if we success, we will enjoy the success also forever. Know my dear brother in Islam, that this exam or test is none other than the exam of our life itself. Allah says in suratul Mulk: [He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving (Al-Mulk:2) My dear brother in Islam, I am amazed at how much student of this university put the effort into the exam they have. The library was full. Even until the library close, some people still study. And some people stay in the early morning until late evening, to pass the exam. But I am more amazed at how me and you, and all of us are more heedless to the test of this life. For test of this life is real, and the consequence much severe. My dear brother in Islam, In the grave, we will be examined by the Angels with three questions. Masya Allah, no examiner tell spoiler about the exam question, but Allah by His Mercy told us the questions and the answer.
And they will say to their skins, "Why have you testified against us?" They will say, "We were made to speak by Allah, who has made everything speak; and He created you the first time, and to Him you are returned. (Fussilat: 21) So how can we prepare for this exam in our grave, and the more crucial examination before Allah in Judgment Day afterwards? How can we answer before Allah on the day that nor our money nor our children will benefit for us, except those who come to Allah with peaceful heart? The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children. But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart. (Asy syuara: 88-89) My dear brother in Islam, Know that the answer is none other than becoming the people of Laa ilaah illa Allah. Muhammadun rasulullah. Be a muslim. True muslim. With all our heart, turning fully toward Islam. My dear brother in Islam, What does this word “Laa ilaaha illa Allah” really means? If this is just a word, why so many people in the East and in the West, in past and in present, die in the cause of this sentence? If this is just a word, why the people of Quraysh back then find it very difficult to pronounce this word? Are we sure that we will enter paradise by merely uttering this word? If saying is enough, then it is very easy to enter paradise. Even our non-muslim friend can just say it and enter paradise. My dear brother in Islam, Know that Laa ilaaha illa Allah means, “No deity worthy of worship except Allah.” It can also be represented by the verses we read every day in our prayer. Only You alone we worship and Only You alone we ask for help (al-Fatihah: 5) Ibnu Abbas RA said that “iyyaka na’budu” means: It is You whom we single out, whom we fear and Whom we hope in, You alone, our Lord, and none else.” The word ‘Abd in Arabic language literally means slave. Iyyaka na’budu means: O Allah, to You only we become slave. We will not be slaved by money, power, woman, another person, tyrant, nor any other false God except You. Today we do not have any more master-slave relationship like in the old days. Back then, being slave to someone means that you are giving away your freedom under the care of your master. Being a slave also means you are giving away your preferences, and prefers what your master prefers. Being a slave means obeying your master in all your master commands you, without any second thought. This looks very injustice, but knows that Allah is the best of the Master, and he is the Most Merciful. That’s why this ayah has second part, Iyyaka nasta’iin “to You alone we ask for help.” Because He is the Most Merciful master, we ultimately turn to Him only for all our needs. We put our trust and hope on Him in all our affair. If we fulfil our part to Him, which is worship, He will also fulfil His part to us, which is to help us in a way that He knows is the best for us, not what we ourselves think is the best for us. We believe that only Him alone can make everything happens for us, for everything on heaven and on earth is under His Kingdom, and none of the living being except He grasps his forehead. This is the true essence of Laa ilaaha illa Allah. My dear brother in Islam, Ask ourselves, is my love and fear for Allah greater than anything else? Ask ourselves, am I putting my trust and hope with Allah and only Allah alone? Ask ourselves, do I worship Him with full sincerity and pure intention? Ask ourselves, am I really submitting to Him, crying, and being humble in my prayer? Ask ourselves, do I already love what He loves, hate what He hates, and love others only for His sake? Know my dear brothers, that those are the qualities of true people of Laa ilaaha illa Allah. Those are the qualities of the truthful. Those are the qualities of the people who will past the test of this life. وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ ۖ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكَاذِبِينَ {3} But We have certainly tested those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars. (al-ankabut:3) 2nd khutba Alhamdulillah. Wassalaatu wassalaamu ‘alaa ‘ibaadihilladziina sthofaa Muhammadin wa ‘alaa aalihii wa ashabihi wa man tabi’ahu ilaa yaumid diin. O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are the truthful (at-taubah: 119) My dear brother in Islam, When we are studying for our exam, what do we want to achieve? Maybe good grades, prides, better job, cum laude status or just fear of the failure. How long will we be happy if we pass our exam? How long will we be sad if we fail our exam? One day, one week, one month? My dear brother in Islam, Why do we pronounce Laa ilaaha illa Allah? Why do we struggle in this life? Why do we restrain ourselves from alcohol? From zina? From lying? Why do we come here? Why do we come to mosque in Friday, while our friends are busy with work, or are enjoying their lunch? Why do we want to pass the exam of this life? What is it that is so great to put our utmost striving for? My dear brother in Islam, Know that there is a place waiting for us. The place no eyes has ever seen, no ear has ever heard, and no mind can ever imagine. This place is so vast, much larger than the heaven and the earth. In this place, there is no lying, no envy, no resentment, no enmity. All of us would be friends, no hatred among us, fully in peace, in harmony. There will be couches, adorned with silk brocade, with fruits just come to our hand. Young children will run around us, serving us with cups and goblets of wine. Besides us, there will be maidens with beautiful eyes, firm breast, and full of love. We will never be tired nor we will be sleepy Our life will be just enjoyment, and every day will be better and better than the previous day. Know my dear brother in Islam, that this place is Jannah, it is paradise. It has been created by Allah, and it is waiting for us. In Jannah, we will meet again our wives. We will meet again our children. We will meet again our parent. We will meet again our friends in Islam. And know my brother, the greatest enjoyment in Jannah is neither its palace, nor its food and drinks, nor its maiden. But know my brother, that the greatest enjoyment in Jannah is the meeting with Allah ‘azza wa jalla, seeing His Face. And all this enjoyment will last forever, forever and ever and ever. Truly happily ever after. And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous (Ali Imran: 133)
Let us pray together for our goodness, Ya Allah, Iyyaka na’budu wa iyyaka nasta’in. Only to You we worship and only to You we ask for help. Ya Allah, make us, our parent, our children, our wives, and our brothers among the people of Laa ilaaha illa Allah, and make us among the dwellers of paradise.
