Cycling is a very common form of transport in the Netherlands. As Enschede is located near the German border, we cycled to Alstatte. Alstätte is a village in the municipality of Ahaus in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is about ten kilometers northwest of Ahaus, close to the Dutch border. Cycling in the Netherlands is very pleasant as cyclists get their own lane and they are also regulated by traffic lights. As the public transport can be costly, it is a wise option to use bikes instead. We gathered at IVEO at dzuhur and after prayer we were on our way. There weren't many participants unlike the Keukenhof event as only 7 people came, but the show must go on. The traffic volume in Holland is not high and this adds to our comfort as cyclists as well. The leader was in front and he is guided by GPS. Most countries in the European Union (EU) share open borders as part of the Schengen Agreement, thus people are able to enter and leave at will. Control of entry is only done in the first country of entry. After about 30 minutes, we reached the German border. Sometimes we entered semi highways thus we had to take extra care when crossing roads. We arrived at Alstatte at around 15.30 but we planned to eat at our booked restaurant at 16.00, so we decided to explore the village. It was a calm and quite neighbourhood, very suitable for retirement homes or for people who wish to stay away from the hectic life of big cities. Finally the time came and we arrived at the restaurant on time. The name of the restaurant was 'Alexana' and it is owned by an egyptian friend of ours. We were able to get a good price and the meal made us full. It was also Halal, thus clearly in our favour. Satisfied from the meal, it was time to go. However, we did not want to go Enschede directly. On our way, we stopped by at 'Eetcafe Winkelman' for some tea, ice cream and coffee. The weather was better than expected as there was supposed to be a bit of rain, but it did not rain at all. Temperatures were as low as 12 C, but we got significant exposure of sunlight. Perhaps the most pleasant part of the trip was the scenery. As we cycled, we could see meadows and farms all under the clear blue sky. We were in a village and there weren't too many cars. The atmosphere was very pleasant we were grateful that there was no rain. We finally got back to our initial meeting point at IVEO and bid farewell. UT Muslims would like to thank all the participants of this event and we hope that you all had a great time. We hope to see you again soon in the future.
