UT Muslims continues to contribute to the twente community and this time we gave arabic lessons. The arabic language course has already taken place since around 2014. In 2017, the arabic course was offered for free. The course is taught in the bastille building in the evening. The students come from different backgrounds; there were students from Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Mexico and the Netherlands. Most of the students came to know about the course via online sources such as facebook. Everyone had different motivations for the course. One student said that because it was free. Another found in interesting as native speakers were present. One student also mentioned that she was interested in calligraphy thus a strong foundation in Arabic would be important. Generally speaking, each student wanted to gain an additional language skill. Since this is a beginners course, the students all had to start with alphabets. It was quite challenging at first but with practice from homework, they got better. When the alphabets became familiar, the students got to learn more about words and basic phrases. The students found the course to be very interesting. One student from the Netherlands felt that he achieved a great milestone. It was now possible to read arabic text despite not yet knowing the translation. Another student said that he found the conversation part to be the most fascinating. At the end of the course, the exam came and it was divided into three parts. The first part was a dictation, thus the students had to write what the teacher said. The second part was a general written test. The third and last part was an oral exam which tests the students pronounciation, vocabulary and basic conversation. Finally, the certificates were distributed to all the students. As the general reception was positive, the students would like it if the next level of the language course would be offered. Of course UT Muslims will try to turn this into reality. UT Muslims would like to thank the teaching staff and students for making this language course successful.
